Weiwei Gao fires 67 in day 1 of Alta Vista Fun Golf



Fourteen-year-old Weiwei Gao tamed the treacherous layout of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club shooting five-under-par 67 strokes to lead the overall title contenders of the club’s annual Fun Golf Tournament, which teed off Saturday.

Gao made six birdies against a lone bogey.  He went one-under-par after the first hole then completed the front nine at two-under-par with another birdie on the par-3 6th hole.

He opened the back nine with a birdie on the par-5 10th but bogeyed the par-4 12th, which was the lone blemish on his scorecard.

Gao knocked in three straight birdies on the 14th, 15th, and 16th to go three-under-par on the back nine.

Lawyer Marlo Cugtas set the pace for class A with a net score of 66 strokes.  Toby Florendo and Jay Lee both carded four-under-par 68 strokes.

Jun Zosa, who wore his traditional La Salle green attire, fired a net score of 65 strokes to lead class B.  Lino Dagus made 68 while Al Alcibar had 70 strokes.

Jason Flores leads class C with a net score of 70 while Danny Aballe fired 71 strokes.

In the seniors’ division, tournament chairman Vicente Go fired a gross four-over-par 76 strokes to set the pace for this category exclusive to players aged 55 to 69 years old.

Setting the pace in the battle for the net honors are Rolando Alberto and Atty. Ellie Espinoza with 61 strokes each.  Alberto had a gross 77 while Espinoza shot 78 strokes.

David Villono leads the super seniors (70 years old and above) category with a net score of 66 strokes followed by Justice Pampio Abarintos with 67. Abarintos celebrated his 70th birthday on the golf course.

Marina Kaufmann paces the distaff side with a net score of 76 strokes.  Two strokes behind her are Sol Pasion and Mayette Alba.

Sir Cross Abarintos leads the dependents’ category with a net score of 71 strokes.

At stake for a hole-in-one in the tournament are a Foton pick-up, a Club Car golf cart, a residential lot from Santa Lucia Realty, bet coupons from Pagcor, a Haojue motorcycle from Norkis Trading, a trip to Dakak from Marist Royal Holidays, an atmospheric water generator from San Gabriel Metal Concepts, a trip to Korea from Air Busan, and hotel stays at Marco Polo Plaza Hotel and Moevenpick Hotel Mactan Island.

A Skygo motorcycle is at stake for an eagle on any of the par-4 holes.

In case more than one player would win a particular prize or set of prizes for hole-in-one, they shall be equally shared.

The awards ceremony for the two-day, 18-hole event open exclusively to club members and guests of sponsors will be held on Sunday at the Alta Vista ballroom.
