The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) has clinched the top spot in the tertiary football of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) after a 1-0 edging of the University of the Visayas (UV) yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).
UV goalkeeper Nico Luzon conceded the goal in the dying minutes of the match when he failed to stop the long shot attempt of USPF defender Lopito Tumulak.
The ball bounced on Luzon’s chest and dropped inside the net to hand USPF its second straight win equivalent to six points in the tournament.
In the earlier matches, defending champions University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) got its title-retention bid back on track with a 1-0 blanking of the Don Bosco College (DBC) courtesy of an early goal by Brian Tabuelog.
The University of Cebu (UC), on the other hand, squeezed past the University of San Carlos (USC), 2-1.
USC had taken the lead with a goal by Daniel Caballero in the first half, however, Ralph Plaza scored the equalizer for UC six minutes into the second half.
Famous Ene Azibataran handed UC the win when his attempt found the back of the net in the 76th minute.
