Cebu Country Club got a huge lift from the youthful Julius Pierre ‘Pio’ Neri, who carded an even-par 36 ppoints, to seize the lead in the Founders division of the 69th Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub Golf Tournament played at the Mimosa Golf Club in Angeles City, Pampanga.

In the premiere Championship division, the battle for the top honors further heated up as Canlubang and defending champion Manila Southwoods are now tied for the lead with two-day totals of 275 points.

Neri, a Legal Management student at Ateneo de Manila University, led the Cebuanos to a second day output of 118 points for a two-day aggregate of 228.  Also counting for the team total during the second round were veteran Ramontito Garcia with 32 points, Marko Sarmiento 27, and Marc Gonzalez 23.  Miguel Martinez again fired 19 points, which did not count.

The tournament format calls for a team to field five players per round with only the four best scores to count for the team total.

The event uses the Stableford or PAL Points System.  This format awards six points for a double-eagle, five for an ace, four for eagle, three for birdie, two for par, and one for bogey.

Forest Hills runs second with 226 points on rounds of 114 and 112 while first round leader Villamor dropped to third with 225 (119-106).  Rounding up the top five are Tagaytay Highlands with 223 (103-120) and Alabang 213 (102-111).

 

CHAMPIONSHIP

Ira Alido was the star of the day as the 16-year-old fired three-under-par 39 points to lead Manila Southwoods to a total of 138 points on the second day.  Together with their opening round of 137, the winner of the tournament played in Cebu last year, are now tied with upstart Canlubang.

“I was surprised with how I played. I couldn’t play this way in the practice round,” the high school student from Dela Salle-Zobel told reporters.

Also counting for Southwoods were Jets Sajulga 35, Brixton Aw 35, and Ryan Monsalve 29. The 27 of Vince Lauron did not count.

Canlubang got a pair of even-par 36 points Rupert Zaragosa and Carlo Villaroman while Luis Miguel Castro added 35 and Gabriel Manotoc made 30.  The 29 of Jakey Yulo did not count.

Luisita is at third place with 255 points (120-135) while Del Monte runs fourth with 250 (124-126), and at fifth is Orchard with 249 (125-124).

 

AVIATOR

            Valley Golf took command in this category with an aggregate of 230 points on rounds of 108 and 122.  Running second is Manila Golf 228 (115-113) followed by first-day leader Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club with 227 (121-106).

Davao’s Rancho Palos Verdes is fourth with 212 (109-103) while Cagayan de Oro’s Pueblo de Oro rounds up the top five with 210 (108-102) along with Wack-Wack 112-98).

At seventh and eighth spots are Zamboanga 199 (107-92) and Davao’s Apo 196 (108-88).

Alta Vista Golf and Country Club is ninth with a total of 193 (99-94) followed by Mactan Island Golf Club at 10th with 189 (87-102).

Alta Vista was led by Gabriel Yap with 31 points.  He was backed by Alex Yeo with 25, Dr. Jerry Uyheng with 20, and Wendell Yap with 18.  Marvin Mendoza, who suffered a pinched nerve and could not anymore play accounted for 11 points, which did not count for the team total.

Skipper Enrico Solon who broke the news about Mendoza said that a new set of five players will take over for Alta Vista on the last two days.

Mactan had junior golf standout Russel Bautista leading the scorers with 32 points.  Also counting for the team total were Andrew Canete 26, Arman Guangko 25, and Retired General Bam Jamorabo with 19.  The 17 of BGen Nick Parilla did not count.

There are 25 teams in this class.

 

SPORTSWRITERS

Phul. Navy continues to lead this group with a total of 201 points on rounds of 104 and 97.  Jumping up to second is Camp John Hay with 187 (80-107).

At 183, Santa Elena is on third spot on rounds of 88 and 95 while at fourth is Sarangani with 181 (91-90).

Club Filipino Incorporada de Cebu is fifth with 162 points on rounds of 80 and 82.  Counting for the team total on the second day were Baltaire Balangauan and Razy Razon with 21 apiece as well as Evans Tumaliwan and Peter Miltante with 20 each.  The 17 of Dominic Gotiong did not count.

There are 24 teams lumped in this fourth-ranked category.
