POOLED REPORT FROM THE PSA
NAY PYI TAW – A grand ceremony to rival past ones.
This is a secret the hosts are unveiling Wednesday when the 27th SEA Games formally unfolds at the Wunna Theikdi Stadium.
As of late Tuesday, organizers have yet to release the program drawn up by Myanmar’s Ministry of Culture but it is expected the hosts’ top officials are going to be present. It is not known, however, who will declare the Games open.
Another promise but also remaining a big question mark is how the hosts are going to further spice up the proceedings, which have the parade of athletes, general oath-taking, the lighting of the Games torch, cultural presentations and a fireworks display are but some of Chef of Mission Jeff Tamayo and Deputy CDM Monsour del Rosario head the PHL delegation, which will have Jason Balabal as flag-bearer and joined by most of the athletes who are already in this spanking-new capital.
Representatives of the other athletes from the other venues in Mandalay, Yangon and Ngwe Saung Beach are also expected to come.
This marks only the third time and first since 1969 this country formerly known as Burma is hosting the event and it is ensuring this edition would be truly a memorable one for all the participants.
Except for chinlone, wushu and wrestling, which wound up their competitions Tuesday, there remain plenty more medals in 33 other sports disciplines to be disputed over the next 12 days before the windup on Dec. 22.
Equestrian and shooting actually kick off earlier Wednesday before the evening festivities.
