POOLED REPORT FROM PSA
NAY PYI TAW – Team Philippines’ billiard team suffered a big shock Thursday morning when news of the death of Iris Rañola’s father reached the squad’s quarters at the Thurizza Hotel here.
Rañola could not be contacted for comment, but Cebuana Rubilen Amit said her teammate’s father has long been suffering from cancer.
Team Philippines psychologist Rey Canlas is set to have a talk with Rañola later Thursday to help determine the Zamboanga City native’s plans for the remainder of the 27th SEA Games.
“It’s too soon to tell, because she’s still grieving,” said Amit of her roommate. “Maybe later, after her talk with Dr. Canlas, we’ll know.”
Rañola is set to start defending her 9-ball singles Friday, being entered in the preliminaries along with Amit. They are also competing in the 10-ball singles.
Rañola also won the 8-ball gold medal in Indonesia two years ago.
