DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines – Team Cebu City Niños flexed their muscles in the last two days to finish as the overall champions in the Batang Pinoy 2017 Visayas Games which came to an end Thursday, November 16.
The Niños had a total medal tally of 46 golds, 59 silvers and 69 bronze medals as of 5pm on Thursday. Some of their medals in arnis were not counted because the event finished late afternoon.
The overall champions relegated host city Dumaguete to second place with its medal tally of 41-29-44 while early leader Cebu Province settled for third place with 39-37-44.
Completing the top 5 were Bacolod at fourth place after amassing 36-26-29 and Iloilo City at fifth place with 31-19-23.
The Niños had a slow start dropping from second place to as low as fourth place before taking over the top of the medal standings via a 33 gold medal haul during the penultimate day of this multi-sporting event.
The bulk of their gilts came from dancesports wherein the Niños made much impact after sweeping all 10 gold medals at stake. Also contributing much were their arnisadors who bagged 15 gold medals. Other events which also handed in multiple gold medals were athletics with 8, karatedo (6), taekwondo (5), chess (3), beach volleyball (2), table tennis (2), pencak silat.
Chipping a gold medal each were tennis, boxing, basketball, archery and swimming.
Dumaguete, on the other hand, relied on their archers who accounted for 9 gold medals which allowed them to momentarily take the lead from early leader Cebu Province.
Cebu Province, for its part, reigned supreme in karatedo and taekwondo.
The gold and silver medalist in this week-long Visayas Games are qualified to compete in the national finals slated next year in the Luzon area.
