A penalty with just a few minutes remaining in the match allowed the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USP-F) to post its first win against collegiate defending champions University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) in Sunday’s opening of the football tournament of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) at the football field of the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).
The penalty, a result from a handball call against the kicking Jaguars, was converted by USP-F’s central defender Janry Acaso to hand the Panthers the 1-0 win.

Earlier in the day, secondary division’s Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) started the opening day’s late scoring with a 3-0 thrashing of the younger USP-F team.
Philippine Under 16 member Kintaro Miyagi scored the first of his two goals in the 45th minute, which was followed by a goal from Joshua Shields seven minutes later. Miyagi sealed the Magis Eagles’ win with his goal in the 59th minute.
The second match in the secondary division had University of San Carlos (USC) streaking past USJ-R, 4-2.
USC’s tertiary brothers also barged into the win column with a 1-0 edging of Don Bosco College (DBC).
The other collegiate match saw University of the Visayas ending its first match against University of Cebu in a 1-all stalemate.
The tournament will resume this weekend with matches in the secondary division to be held on Saturday and games in the collegiate division to be played on Sunday.
