This year’s football tournament of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) will kick off with the matches of the secondary division at the football field of the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).
Hoping to post its first win in this year’s season is the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USP-F) as it goes up against last year’s first runner-up Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC).
The second game will see University of San Carlos (USC) against University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R).
The defending champions, Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), will be sitting out the tournament’s first day and will only be seeing action next weekend.
In the collegiate division, defending champion USJ-R will play the first game against USP-F.
The afternoon matches will have University of the Visayas toughing it out against the University of Cebu (UC) while the last match of the opening day will have Don Bosco College (DBC) playing against USC.
Tournament director Francis Ramirez said that this year’s tournament will return to the old format of single round-robin after some teams complained of the lengthy period that it took to finish the tournament last year after it followed a double round-robin format in the eliminations.
With the old format in place, the tournament will hold its finals on the first week of October barring schedule changes for valid reasons.
The top four in both the secondary and collegiate divisions will advance to the semifinals with the no.1 team going against the no.4 team and the no.2 and no.3 teams contesting the other finals ticket.
All matches will be held at the CCSC.
