(CESAFI) basketball tournament after upsetting defending champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles, 61-58, Sunday, August 20 at the New Cebu Coliseum.
Games Tuesday, August 22, New Cebu Coliseum
5:15 p.m. USC vs CITU (High School)
6:45 p.m. USC vs SWU (College)
The UV Baby Lancers is sharing the top spot in the junior division with the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) Baby Jaguars who routed the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 84-64, in an earlier game to also go 3-0 in the league.
The SHS-AdC Magis Eagles absorbed their first loss of the season and drops to 3-1 while the USPF Baby Panthers remain winless after 3 games.
Beirn Anthony Laurente led the UV Baby Lancers as he tallied 14 markers while also contributing much was Justin Jake Rosete who had 10 points.
The Magis Eagles was topscored by Christian Manaytay who also had 14 points while Patrick Wilson Yu chipped in 11 points.
Arnold Dave Ando led the rout for the USJR Baby Jaguars with 19 points while giving him much help was John Kirck Gonzaga and Elmer Echavez who added 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Leading the USPF Baby Panthers was Winston Jay Ynot who had 21 points. He was the only one in the team who scored in double digits.
UV Baby Lancers VS SHS-AdC Magis Eagles
The Magis Eagles scored the first basket and even took an early one point lead at 4-3 but a 10-0 run by the Baby Lancers anchored on four straight points each from Laurente and Rosete stumped them at 4-13 before Patrick Wilson Yu managed to sink a basket with 3:53 left in the first quarter.
After posting a 12-point lead, 18-6, going into the second canto, the Baby Lancers continued to manhandle the Magis Eagles who was missing one of their key players, Andrew Vincent Velasco, who has been ruled out of the season after breaking his leg in a freak accident last week in their game against the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves. Without Velasco, the Magis Eagles provided no threat from the outside.
The Baby Lancers continued to build up on their advantage and stretched their lead to 16 points, 34-18, at the halftime break.
However, armed with the composure of a four-time champion, the Magic Eagles slowly started to get back into the game in the third quarter on the efforts of Patrick Wilson Yu, two-time CESAFI junior MVP Jed Cedrick Colonia and Manaytay and managed to bring down the Baby Lancers lead to just 8 points, 39-47, going into the final quarter.
Patrick Wilson Yu and Manaytay continued to rally for the Magis Eagles who got closer at just 3 points behind on a basket from Franz Ray Diaz, 56-59, with just 1:19 left in the ballgame.
A jumper from Laurente widened the gap once again to 5 points, 61-56, but Jhon Benedict Yu closed it again to 3 points, 58-61, with just 28 seconds left.
Had Colonia’s trey attempt gone in at the buzzer, the Magis Eagles could have forged an overtime, instead they suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to a 3-1 slate.
